Kitchen Tiles

It is time to renovate or spruce up the kitchen.  You want something you can do yourself on a weekend, perhaps. Consider kitchen tiles. You can tile or retile quickly, easily and beautifully. You can, providing you can manage to choose from the vast varieties in color, size and materials currently available.

Why tile? It is versatile. You can place kitchen tiles on the floor, on the walls and on the countertops. Tiles are also easy to clean, durable and classy. They can brighten up a kitchen, complement the cupboards and countertops and emphasize various aspects of your lifestyle. Kitchen tiles are also ideal for another reason. You can mix and match. It is possible to decorate your kitchen with tiles in several different colors or accent the room using a unique design.

When it comes to selecting kitchen tiles, there are several options to consider. Do you want ceramic, natural stone, porcelain, slate or marble? What is the purpose of the kitchen tiles? Where are you placing them? Are they for the countertop, wall or floor? What kind of traffic do you expect? Will you require specialty tiles?

Popular kitchen tiles are ceramic. They originate as clay, talc and/or other minerals. This material has certain properties conducive to kitchen use. Ceramic kitchen tiles are colorful and aptly suited to countertop usage. These tiles do not burn or discolor under hot temperatures.

A variety of popular ceramic tile is the mosaic. Using custom or pre-designed mosaic tiles can lend a splash of color and creativity to your kitchen. On the walls, these types of kitchen tiles create a unique look. It is one way for you to provide a simple but strong statement about your kitchen.

Terracotta, ceramic or natural stone kitchen tiles are handy if you are interested in a warm, homey look. Those in soft and earthy browns or glowing reds also provide the basis for a Mexican theme.  If you want a more Mediterranean or Grecian theme, use ocean blue and creamy white colors. Change the colors and you create a new theme.  

Another option is porcelain kitchen tiles. These are very tough and resistant to scratches or chips. Porcelain kitchen tiles resemble stone. The two materials are alike in shade and texture. Place them in high traffic areas.

Glass kitchen tiles, once prohibitively expensive, are now a possibility for decorating your kitchen. Their reflective quality brightens up darker rooms. Used on a wall, like ceramic mosaics, glass kitchen tiles make a priceless addition to your kitchen.

Kitchen tiles are not perfect. They may be water and heat resistant, durable to scratches and other marks, but they depend upon grout. Grout is necessary. You also have to clean grout regularly. If you neglect to do so, it will stain.

Furthermore, no mater how tough the material, kitchen tiles are susceptible to breaking and the usual wear and tear expected in a high traffic, well-used room. Kitchen tiles need replacement. How frequently depends upon the material you choose, the quality of the kitchen tiles, the amount of traffic and the type of care you give them. Be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the type of tile before you choose. Know the specific usage and apply the recommended care. If you follow the directions and take care of the floor, you will have a long-lasting and satisfactory symbiotic relationship.
